Delaying Retirement with Plastic Surgery - Patrick Sullivan, M.D. Skip to main content

On September 20th, The Providence Journal shared an article from writer Erin E. Arvedlund titled Staving Off Unwanted Retirement With Plastic Surgery. In the article, she discussed how plastic surgery and non-surgical procedures have become a top anti-retirement expense among Baby Boomers. Leigh Hope Fountain, spokeswoman for the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery stated: “Itâ€s very ageist, but itâ€s the unfortunate reality.â€

Baby Boomers are still working for various reasons ranging from necessity due to economics to pure enjoyment. Looking and feeling their best at their age often requires extra help either from non-surgical injections or plastic surgery.

We have seen this trend in our practice as well. Some of our Baby Boomer patients have had both surgical and non-surgical procedures. One of our patients was an established businessman who wanted to continue running his successful company.   However, he wanted to address his tired look and sad appearance to look more youthful so we performed the following:

  1. A multi-layer face lift with sculpting and removal of fat deposits in the face and neck.
  2. Fat grafting from his own fat (and the associated stem cells) with injections into deflated facial areas.
  3. Smooth out the deep creases of the chin and neck with the release of the retaining ligaments.
  4. Later, in order to smooth out the facial area as much as possible, Juvéderm was used in the nasolabial folds and in other deep facial wrinkles.

Since his surgery, he felt his procedures gave him a more normal and youthful contour in his neck area, where he felt he had “lost†his neck as part of the aging process.
