Save Your Skin, Save Your Life: Some Facts about Skin Cancer

Sun ScreenAccording the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is “the most common form of cancer in the United States†with over 3.5 million skin cancers being diagnosed annually. Over the past three decades skin cancer has accounted for more cancers than all other forms combined. More than 90% of skin cancers are caused by exposure to the sunâ€s rays and furthermore a personâ€s risk for skin cancer can double with just five or more sunburns. Another startling statistic recently released is that the rate of skin cancer among men has spiked since 1975, showing an increase of over 150%. In fact, men between the ages of 15 to 39 are twice as likely as women to die of melanoma.

Dr. Sullivan and his team are strong advocates of patient safety and education. It is Dr. Sullivanâ€s recommendation that you always use a broad spectrum SPF 50 or higher (Dr. Sullivan uses SPF 100 in many instances) when enjoying your time in the sun.

Dr. Sullivan is a proud sponsor of the Melanoma Foundation of New England and a co-sponsor of the upcoming Martinis for Melanoma event to be held this Wednesday, May 20th at Eleven Forty Nine Restaurant in East Greenwich, RI. To purchase tickets for this worthwhile event click here.
