Younger patients who are looking to lift their cheekbones, plump their lips and define their features use fillers to achieve their cosmetic goals and enjoy a more sculpted and improved appearance.
Facial fillers, when done right, can provide outstanding results, but they are temporary enhancers. How long do they last?
Facial fillers–how long do they last?
The answer can vary widely. Facial fillers can last anywhere from months to many years. How long the filler lasts generally depends on which type of filler is used and where it is placed. Lifestyle also has a huge impact on how long the filler lasts. For instance if you exercise in excess of two or more hours per day or are dieting for weight loss you may find that your product does not last long at all.
There are several types of fillers:
HA-based fillers
HA-based fillers are a gel-like substance with a hyaluronic acid (HA) base, a naturally-occurring substance in your body. HA hydrates, adds volume and can improve the artistic contours of your face.
HA-based fillers typically last 6 to 12 months, and in some cases, can last much longer-especially if done in the lower eyelid / lid cheek junction. Thus we DO NOT recommend having them placed in that area at this time. Juvederm and Restylane are some of the most commonly known and used HA fillers though we use many others as well.
Juvederm: here are some very general guidelines to help you but results may vary significantly
Juvederm Vollure XC and Juvederm XC, which are used to soften and smooth deeper wrinkles, can last up to 18 months.
Voluma XC, another filler from Juvederm, fills the cheeks and reduces wrinkles and hollows. This filler can last for up to 2 years.
Volbella XC from Juvederm reduces the appearance of lines around the mouth, and plumps the lips. Its effects last for up to 1 year.
Ultra XC from Juvederm can be used almost anywhere on the face to reduce laugh lines, nose folds, deep wrinkles and lips. Results last for 1 year.
Restylane: again very general guidelines but results may vary significantly
Restylane and Restylane-L smooth wrinkles around the nose and mouth and fill the skin. The results last for up to 18 months.
Restylane Lyft smooths out deeper lines and wrinkles, and its effects can last up to 12 months.
Restylane Silk fills out and plumps the lips. Results can last for up to 6 months.
Restylane Refyne and Defyne are unique fillers that smooth the area around the nose and mouth. Results last for up to 12 months.
Revanesse Versa
Revanesse Versa has a unique particle shape and size that allows it to spread more smoothly and evenly as it treats facial wrinkles and folds, plumps lips, and improves age-related volume loss in the lips and cheeks. It can last for up to six months.
Belotero Balance
Belotero Balance is a newer hyaluronic acid-based filler, which is used to more temporarily smooth out and fill in nasolabial lines. Depending on which part of the face it’s applied to, it can last for 6-18 months.
The RHA Collection
The RHA Collection of fillers is formulated to most closely mimic the natural hyaluronic acid in the body. These fillers target dynamic wrinkles without causing the face to appear stiff or unnatural. They can last for about 9-18 months.
Fillers not based on HA
Radiesse
Radiesse is made with tiny spheres of calcium hydroxylapatite, a naturally-occuring substance in the body. Radiesse provides volume in the cheeks and reduces wrinkles and folds, and boosts collagen production. Results can last about 15 months.
Takeaway
Fillers are a highly popular treatment that can help smooth away wrinkles, defines your features and provides needed volume. It must be done with an artistic eye or results can look overdone and unnatural. Depending on which type is use, and how it is used your filler results can continue to look beautiful for months to years.
