Male Rhinoplasty for a Natural Appearing Enhancement
Besides a chiseled jawline and chin, nothing defines your profile as much as the size and shape of your nose. In fact, in some cultures, the size and shape of the nose were believed to provide insights into someone’s personality and character. For example, you may have heard of a Roman nose (à la Tom Cruise), which is prominent with a pronounced bridge that often gives it a bit of a hook.
It was considered a great asset by the Caesars, and their coinage often showed them in profile. This is not surprising, since some of the characteristics that, supposedly, go with it are leadership, ambition, courage and the ability to influence others.
All that be as it may, the issue is whether YOU like your nose.
Dr. Sullivan’s Specialized Surgery for Reshaping and Correcting Conditions of the Nose: Creating an Improved Shape that Artistically Matches Your Face and Does NOT have an Operated Appearance
Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic procedure for reshaping and/or resizing the nose. Because its name is taken from the Greek, rhino-, meaning nose, it is often thought to be the only surgical procedure for the nose. It is not. For example, a septoplasty, corrects structural abnormalities, like a deviated septum or crooked nose. A rhinoplasty may, however, be done in conjunction with a septoplasty or even, on rare occasion, some injectable fat harvested from you to achieve a complete correction for the nose appearance and structure.
What Male Rhinoplasty Can Fix
If you have ever stood in front of a mirror, either sideways or twisting and turning your head—even with another mirror in one hand—you know how difficult it can be to see your actual profile. During your initial consultation, Dr. Sullivan will give you a mirror or two and together you will go over the details of your nose. We will take digital photos of you that you may also find helpful. He will devise a specific plan for you that may include:
- Removing a bump on the bridge of your nose.
- Reshaping the tip.
- Narrowing your nose to artistically match the other handsome features of you face.
- The nostrils may also be addressed.
- Changing the size of your nose (making it smaller or larger, again to better artistically match the proportions of your face).
- Changing the angle between your nose and upper lip, if that would be beneficial.
- Any other features you would like to discuss, or that Dr. Sullivan feels are important to get you the best, most natural appearing nose for your face.
Your customized treatment plan will be determined together, and you will have plenty of time to ask questions and share your thoughts.

What is the Procedure for Male Rhinoplasty?
The procedure used depends on the purpose of the surgery, however, it is done as an out-patient procedure under general sedation.
There are three possible approaches:
- Open –The incision is made in the area between the nostrils; used for reshaping tips.
- Closed – (The most common for Dr. Sullivan) Incisions are hidden on the inside of nose.
- Where the nose is going to be narrowed, the nasal bones will be altered in shape during surgery. Again, it is all about artistically matching the face for a very natural appearance.
What to Expect During Recovery from Male Rhinoplasty
During the surgery, an exterior nasal splint will be applied. Internal packing is rarely needed, though internal splints may be placed in certain circumstances to assist in preventing scar tissue from forming.
Although some bruising and swelling may still be a bit evident, your nose will start to look good after one week, which is when the splint will be removed. Soon you will be admiring your own nasal shape, but there will be gradual refinements over the course of a year.
