Dr. Sullivan Reflects on Our Recent Patient Education Seminar - Blog 1 - Patrick Sullivan, M.D. Skip to main content

Our most recent patient education seminar, held at the Ocean House in Westerly, RI, was a terrific success. At these seminars, we aim to share the latest updates and information in the field of plastic surgery with interested attendees. Much of this information comes from new and proven treatment information I am invited to share on a regular basis with plastic surgeons at national and international meetings. This spring alone I was invited to speak at the New York Regional Society of Plastic Surgeons annual spring meeting. At this meeting I was asked to discuss my research and specialized treatment for eyelid and facial surgery as well as new plastic surgical advances using fat injections. Also this spring I was invited to give teaching courses in San Francisco at the American Society of Plastic Surgeons annual meeting. In these courses I discussed the sophisticated techniques we use in face lifting and neck rejuvenation surgeries that help to bring about a more natural appearance. I also gave a course on advances in upper and lower eyelid surgery with an emphasis on addressing a tired and sad appearance and removing the appearance of under eye circles and the puffiness. We just published two articles on this subject in the Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Journal. We also included important information about upper facial rejuvenation surgery and the methods we use to rejuvenate the brows and forehead region in a natural way, which prevents surgical results which could leave patients with a surprised or startled appearance. With so much of our teaching being to plastic surgeons it is an absolute delight to share my knowledge with people locally in New England who are interested in learning more about the latest advancements in the field of plastic surgery.

One of my favorite parts of our seminars is hearing from our patients who graciously share their perspective on plastic surgery. At the Ocean House we heard from a facial rejuvenation patient of mine named Margaret who had her face lift one year ago. She spoke about how happy she has been since her facial rejuvenation surgery and how key to her the concept of personal happiness is. She shared with us how important it is to her to be both content professionally and at home. She shared that she is much happier now when she looks in the mirror and that she feels that her internal happiness is now reflected in her external appearance. Margaret also discussed how she had no pain associated with her surgery and how surprised she was by this. This provided me the opportunity to discuss the extra measures we perform to try to keep our patients from experiencing pain and discomfort. We use specialized nonnarcotic medications and also work to block individual nerves with a long acting numbing medication which prevents these nerves from transmitting pain signals. This approach has been very much appreciated by our patients and we are delighted to offer this service to them.

“The level of comfort and the level of responsiveness-those are the details that really make a difference when you are going to have something done.”

The comfort level that you get from Dr. Sullivanâ€s office is amazing. There is such team work, and there is such a family feeling, that you are part of their family. You are part of the team. Their availability, you are always just a phone call away if you have a question. One Sunday I had a question after surgery. I had a question I wanted to ask the doctor about. It was a Sunday afternoon; I called the answering service and a few minutes later Dr. Sullivan calls me back. He was on airplane on route to somewhere and he called me right back to answer my question. The level of comfort and the level of responsiveness-those are the details that really make a difference when you are going to have something done. It is serious and it is a really big decision.
