Helping children in need is an important priority in our practice.  Back in January, I blogged about helping children in South Africa over the holiday break.  It was an incredible experience to work with children and the team at the Red Cross Childrenâ€s Hospital in Cape Town.  Luckily, I live and practice in Providence, Rhode Island where I, too, support amazing programs for children and we support those programs enthusiastically.

On March 5, 2016, I attended a wonderful fundraiser in our city – the Hasbro Childrenâ€s Hospitalâ€s Nerf Ball which raised $1.6 million for patient care, life-saving programs, research, education, and especially the Child Protection Center. With the theme of “Going the Distance to Keep Kids Healthy,†the Convention Center had over 700 attendees in support of the hospitals largest annual fundraiser.  Of the total raised, the eventâ€s live auction “Fund-a-Need†generated more than $205,000 for the Lawrence A. Aubin, Sr. Child Protection Center. This center cares for some of the most vulnerable children in our area who suffer from neglect and abuse and it is the only program of its kind in Rhode Island.

Nerf Ball was chaired by Edward “Ned†O. Handy, President and Chief Operating Officer of Washington Trust and his wife, Polly Chatterton Handy.  The spectacular evening began with a cocktail reception where guests were welcomed by leadership from Rhode Island Hospital, Hasbro Childrenâ€s Hospital, and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  The guests were later introduced with an emotional video on the work of The Aubin Child Protection Center.

The need for a center like this is so unfortunate yet it is vital for these local children who have been neglected, battered, and/or injured.  I am so happy to support an organization like this in our city.
